North Branch is runner-up at Birch Run tournament
BIRCH RUN – North Branch had an up-and-down day Saturday at the Birch Run Invitational, but played well enough to place second in the Gold Bracket of the tournament.
“We struggled mightily early in the day, but regrouped and played at the level I know we are capable of all the time,” said North Branch coach Jim Fish. “
In the same tournament, Cass City was runner-up in the Silver Bracket.
The Broncos went 2-1 in pool play, defeating Saginaw Michigan Lutheran Seminary (28-26, 25-9) and Cass City (25-20, 25-22) and losing to Pewamo-Westphalia (25-19, 25-21).
The Broncos earned the No. 5 seed in Gold Bracket and defeated Saginaw Valley Lutheran (25-23, 22-25, 15-13) in the quarterfinals and got payback on Pewamo-Westphalia (17-25, 25-10, 15-10) in the semifinals before losing to Utica (21-25, 25-23, 17-15) in the championship match.
The Broncos (12-5) were led by Hannah Farnsworth with 36 kills and 10 blocks. Breann June added 38 kills, 37 digs and 10 aces, while Quinn Peterson contributed 28 kills and Regan Swoish added 20. Mikayla Coutcher had a team-high 122 assists to go with 27 digs and eight aces and Chaliese Hyde had 61 digs.
Cass City went 1-2 in pool play, losing to North Branch and Pewamo-Westphalia (25-14, 25-20) and beating Seminary (25-11, 25-14). The Red Hawks were seeded No. 10 after pool play and advanced to play in the Silver Bracket, where they beat Tawas (25-21, 25-19) in the quarters and Adrian (19-25, 25-20, 15-11) in the semis before losing to Frankenmuth (25-21, 25-16) in the Silver Bracket finals.
Despite only appearing in the pool-play matches, Hailey Beckrow led Cass City with 32 kills. Sierra Spry added 15 kills while Abbey Salcido and Madison Cumper excelled defensively with 74 and 61 digs, respectively.
Caro wins Silver Bracket title at Cros-Lex
CROSWELL – The Caro volleyball team racked up some wins Saturday at the Croswell-Lexington Invitational.
After a .500 showing in pool play, the Tigers rallied to capture the Silver Bracket championship, defeating Marine City Cardinal Mooney (24-12, 25-19) in the quarterfinals, Port Huron Northern (25-9, 25-16) in the semifinals and Bad Axe (25-18, 25-23) in the championship match.
Ellie Hornbacher led the Tigers with 34 kills and 70 digs, while also delivering seven aces and blocking three shots. Kaitlyn Arebalo added 26 kills, 35 assists, 26 digs and eight blocks, Raegan Ball delivered 20 kills and 62 digs, Sheridan Dinsmore contributed 13 kills, six aces and three blocks, Jacquie Peters tallied 12 kills and eight blocks and Jenna Topham and Mackenzie Schmidt had 48 assists and 33 digs, respectively.
Caro (6-3-2) went 1-1-1 in pool play.
Millington downs LakeVille
MILLINGTON – The Millington volleyball team improved to 2-1-3 with a 3-1 nonleague win over Otisville-LakeVille Monday.
Kate Cooper led the Cardinals with 14 assists and added 11 digs and seven kills. Nevaeh Hendricks had a team-high 10 kills to go with seven assists and five blocks, Darrien Roberts contributed 14 digs and five aces and Hailey Crump delivered 16 digs and seven kills.
Millington begins Tri-Valley Conference West play today at home against Midland Bullock Creek.
