CHARLES L. WHITNEY

Charles L. Whitney of Vassar, age 85 years, passed away peacefully on Wednesday evening, August 1, 2018. He was born on December 9, 1932 in West Springfield, Pennsylvania the son of the late Ernest and Louise (Gould) Whitney. On August 23, 1952, he married Nancy Lee Painter, and after 65 years together she survives him. Chuck was a teacher at Vassar High School for more than 30 years also driving bus for the school. He was a community civil servant, involved with the city government, instituted the petunia program and inadvertently started the Vassar Pumpkin Roll. He owned and operated Whitney’s Produce and Cork Pine Catering and was a long-time member of St. Luke’s Ev. Lutheran Church.
Surviving family include his wife, Nancy; children: Patricia (Steve) Mecham, Bill (Laura) Whitney, Daniel E. (Kerri) Whitney, Marian Whitney, Thomas A. (Susan) Whitney, Paul (Kortney Peppler) Whitney, Chris (Jenni) Whitney, Chuck (Peg) Kyle and Kathy (Andy Weyer) Kyle; grandchildren: Jessica (Jacob) Zieroff, Dustin (Ashley) Mecham, Trillia Whitney, Noah Whitney, Jon (Lindsey) Whitney, Jeff (Brittney) Whitney, Ryan (Yuni) Whitney, Heather (Jon) Schnittker, Brandon (Dana) Frank, Nicole Hicks, Justin (Rachel) Whitney, Julie (Eric) Clauss, Nolan Whitney, Paige Whitney, Emilee Whitney, Nathan Whitney, Mandy (Harry) Hess, Nick (Jenny) Palm, Sarah (Robby Martinez) Whitham, Ed (Jessica) Whitham, Allison (Chad) Murren and Erin Kyle; 32 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and two sisters, Luella Murch and Jane Trolier. Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Louise and siblings: Loren, Ernest, Harley, Bill, Mabel, Elizabeth and Mary Margaret.
Memorial service will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, August 10, 2018 at St. Luke’s Ev. Lutheran Church, 916 W. Huron Ave. in Vassar. Pastor James Plocher will officiate. The family will greet friends at Penzien Steele Funeral Home, 149 N. Main Street in Vassar on Thursday, August 9, 2018 from 3 to 8 p.m. and at the church on Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Those desiring may make contributions to the St. Luke’s Ev. Lutheran Church or to the St. Luke’s Elementary School.
