Millington’s Jonathon Hoard is one of six youths who will be honored July 14 at the Oakland County Fair as part of the Tractor Supply Co. “Great Neighbor” Essay Contest.
The contest encourages youths across the country to submit a short essay detailing how a memorable 4-H or Future Farmers of America (FFA) experience has influenced their development as a great neighbor in their community. Tractor Supply received hundreds of entries, and Hoard was selected as a winner. He will be recognized during a special ceremony on Saturday, July 14 at 2 p.m. at the Tractor Supply booth inside the Oakland County Fair in Davisburg.
“Fairs have a longstanding tradition of bringing people of all ages together to celebrate the local community and the key role that agriculture plays within it,” said Christi Korzekwa, senior vice president of marketing at Tractor Supply Company. “The ‘Follow Us to the Fair’ Tour seeks to preserve this tradition while adding family fun to the experience. The ‘Great Neighbor’ Essay Contest also lets us recognize the incredible work 4-H and FFA youth are doing in their communities.”
Jonathon, the son of Eric and Jenni Hoard, is 11 years old and will be a seventh-grade student at St. Lorenz Lutheran School, in Frankenmuth.
“It was publicized through Tuscola County 4-H, and (Jonathon is) a really good writer,” Jenni Hoard said. “We were surprised when he won, it was so exciting.”
Jonathon enjoys hunting and participating in 4-H activities, his mother said.
“He was thrilled when he found out he won, he’s looking forward to the awards ceremony,” Jenni Hoard said, adding that Jonathon wants to be a veterinarian when he grows up. “In any profession, being a good writer is important.”
In addition to a commemorative plaque, winners will walk away with a special Tractor Supply gift pack.
