Carleton James Smith of North Branch, age 97, passed away Monday, August 28, 2017 at McLaren Lapeer Regional Hospital.
Carleton was born on April 12, 1920 in North Branch to the late Warren and Bessie Flo (Petrie) Smith. He married Patricia Chapin February 10, 1945 in Fostoria. Carleton retired from GM Truck & Bus in Pontiac. He and Patricia wintered in Tucson, Arizona for 23 years. Carleton attended Fostoria United Methodist Church and was a member of all four orders of The Oddfellows & Rebekah Branch 120 of Fostoria.
He is survived by his loving wife of 72½ years, Patricia; two daughters, Linda Simmons of Southfield and Sheryl Gillett of Petoskey; four grandchildren, Bruce (Colleen) LaValley, Cathy LaValley, Lesley (Brian) Kozminski and Christa (Jeff) Hudson; six great-grandchildren, Amanda, Kelsey, Lauren, Lynsey, Simone and Camille; and special companion, his dog, Max.
Carleton was preceded in death by three brothers, Ralph, Donald and John and his sister, Blanche Kalar.
The family will receive visitors from 1-8 p.m. Wednesday, August 30, 2017 at Avram Funeral Home with an Oddfellows and Rebekah Service from 7-8 p.m.
A Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, August 31, 2017 at the Fostoria United Methodist Church with Pastor Kay Leitelt officiating. The family will receive visitors at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of service.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Fostoria United Methodist Church or The Oddfellows.
