Ronald E. Downs

Ronald E. Downs of Newport, Tennessee (formerly of Marlette, Silverwood and Wolverine, Michigan), age 57, passed away on Friday, May 26, 2017 in Knoxville, Tennessee, after a sudden and short illness. Ron was born September 10, 1959 in Pontiac to William (Bill) and Irene (Noell) Downs. He was united in marriage to Gail Northrop on May 7, 1994 in Marlette.

Ron loved fishing, hunting, demolition derbies – even driving in a few – and NASCAR. He loved doing things with and for his nieces and nephews. He loved seeing all the children in their Halloween costumes.

He is survived by his wife, Gail (Northrop) Downs of Newport, Tennessee; mother-in-law, Doris Northrop of Wolverine; sons: Brandon Downs of Michigan, James Downs and Justin (JD) Downs of Gatlinburg, Tennessee, Patrick Fields of Knoxville, Tennessee and Nicholas Butters of Charlevoix; daughter, Shantelle Rauzer of Boyne City; granddaughter, Audrey Fields of Knoxville, Tennessee; grandson, Carson Pease, Boyne City; sisters: Karen (Don) Ladd of Holly, Sue (Jerry)Yacks of Columbiaville, Pat (Bill) Miller of Hale, Sandy (Karl) Bogdan of Silverwood and Terry (Dave) Boots of Mayville; brother, Roger Downs of Oscoda; sisters-in-law: Donna (Ray) Nichols of Newport, Tennessee, Melinda Northrop, Sevierville, Tennessee and Carol (Mike) Cartwright of Sevierville, Tennessee; brother-in-law, James [Jim] Northrop, Jr. of Wolverine; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Ron was preceded in death by his parents, William (Bill) and Irene (Noell) Downs; brother, Larry Downs and father-in-law, James [Jim] Northrop, Sr.

A memorial service for all family and friends will be held on Saturday, August 19, 2017 at Silverwood United Methodist Church, 2750 Clifford Road, Silverwood, MI 48760. Visitation will be at 11 a.m. with a noon service by Pastor Ronald G. Hutchinson.

A memorial service was held in Tennessee for family and friends there. It was held Thursday, June 1, 2017 at the First United Methodist Church, Newport, Tennessee. Rev. Dr. James Bennington officiated.

Per Ron’s wishes, he was cremated and will be interred with his wife upon her passing. Interment will be in the Union Cemetery in Newport, Tennessee.

The family requests no flowers. Memorial donations in Ron’s name may be made to the Children and Youth programs at the First United Methodist Church Newport, 212 Washington Ave., Newport, TN 37821 or to the family.
