A 41-year-old Kingston man died in a single-vehicle accident Thursday evening in Tuscola County’s Dayton Township.
The name of the man killed in the accident hasn’t been released, pending notification of family.
Michigan State Police handled the incident that happened on Phelps Lake Road, west of Plain Road, in Dayton Township. The accident was reported at 7:19 p.m.
MSP Sgt. Harry Rice said the early 1990s model pickup truck was driving westbound when it ran off the north side of the road and hit two trees. Rice said it’s unknown why the vehicle left the road.
Mayville Fire Department firefighters relied on extrication tools to free the men from the vehicle.
The passenger was pronounced dead at the scene. He was wearing a seat belt.
The male driver from Millington – also unidentified – was transported to an area hospital for treatment. He was not wearing a seat belt.
The vehicle did not have airbags. Alcohol is believed to have been a factor.
Roads were wet and it was raining at the time of the accident, with temps just above the freezing mark at 35 degrees Fahrenheit.
MSP continues investigating the accident, and the story will be updated as new information becomes available.
Any witnesses are asked to contact Tpr. Dennis Lapan, MSP Caro Post, 989-673-2156.
