Gary John Somerville

Gary Somerville pic BWGary John Somerville of Kingston, age 70, passed away Friday, December 2, 2016 at Tuscola County Medical Care Community.
He was born February 14, 1946 in Port Huron to the late John and Gladys (Ballagh) Somerville. He married Catherine A. Doherty on September 17, 1966 in Burnside.
Gary was the Director of Substance Abuse for the Sanilac County Health Department. He was a charter Member of the Lamotte Township Fire Department and a member of Our Lady Consolata of St. Michael Catholic Church, Wilmont. He served as usher and was on the Parish Council. He was the Koylton Township Zoning Administrator for several years and also served as the Dairy 4-H Leader. Gary devoted much of his time to substance abuse treatment and set a great example of recovery of 32 years.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Catherine of Kingston; three sons, John (Melanie) Somerville of Cass City, Joe (Kristy) Somerville of Gaylord and Jeremy Somerville and Val of Cass City; his daughter, Julie (Tim) Ruggles of Kingston; 10 grandchildren, Chelsea, Justin and Kyle Ruggles, Guy and Alexina Somerville, Maggie, Bridget and Luke Somerville and Sailor and Piper Somerville; three step-grandchildren, Tyler, Trent and Tara Nicholas; and a step-great-granddaughter, Kenleigh Nicholas; his brother, Jim (Mary) Somerville of Decker; two sisters, Roxy Sova of Caro and MaryAnn (Mike) Ellery of Lake George; in-laws, Darlene (Alfred) Pitcher, Theresa (Leonard) Redmond, Phil (Becky) Doherty, Vicki Doherty, Virginia (Kirk) Finkbeiner, Linda (Terry) Bissett, Cynthia (Marek) Marcol, Marilyn (Rick) Swoish, and Patrick Doherty; several nieces and nephews; and also Niccole Somerville and Theresa Somerville. He is preceded in death by Carl and Evelyn Doherty, Tom Doherty and Tom Sova.
Visiting hours will be 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday and 4 to 8 p.m. Monday with a prayer service starting at 7 p.m. in Marsh Funeral Chapel, Marlette.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, December 6, 2016 in Our Lady Consolata of St. Michael Catholic Church, Wilmont. The Reverend Father Christian Tabares will officiate.
Burial will be in St. Michael Cemetery, Wilmont. Pallbearers will be Guy and Luke Somerville, Justin and Kyle Ruggles, Matt Doherty, Steve Redmond and Neil Bissett.
Memorials may be made to United Hospice of Marlette or the donor’s choice.
