COLEMAN — The Unionville-Sebewaing softball team showed no signs of slowing down over the weekend with the Division 3 postseason test lying right around the corner.
The Patriots ran through the competition at the Coleman Tournament and in the process, USA took home its third tournament trophy of the year.
In game one the Patriots ousted Pinconning by a score of 5-0.
Erica Treiber pitched the complete-game shutout, fanning seven batters while allowing four hits.
Jessica Gremel backed Treiber’s performance by belting out three hits and two RBI at the plate while Chelsey Bitzer drove in two runs with a double.
Beal City was next up for the Patriots and the result was an 8-2 victory for the red, white and blue.
This time, it was Bitzer who earned the win on the bump. She did it by giving up two unearned runs on five hits.
Offensively, Stephanie Neuman, Taylor Anker and Bitzer had three hits apiece while Gremel plated two runs with two hits. Ashlyn VanHoost tacked on a pair of hits for USA while Ally Hoppe blasted out a three-run homer.
The Patriots capped off their weekend with a 7-0 victory over Freeland thanks to the joint effort of McKenzie Eurich and Treiber.
Together, they allowed just two hits while striking out seven.
Neuman added three hits and three runs scored to her total for the day while Anker collected three singles. Tessa Dinsmoore had two hits for the Patriots as did VanHoost, who tacked on two RBI.
USA finishes the regular season 35-4.
Reese takes lumps on home field
REESE — Reese may have prepared themselves for the postseason by hosting a tough field of teams at their annual tournament. But, they suffered a few bumps and bruises by doing so.
The Rockets suffered three consecutive losses on Saturday, starting with a 9-8 loss to Morley-Stanwood.
Becki Herbolsheimer got the nod and she struggled on the bump, allowing five earned runs on 11 hits while striking out four.
Offensively, Kara Schluckbier led the Rockets after plating three runs on two hits while Herbolsheimer knocked in two. Monica Hagen scored twice on a pair of singles while Cassidy Reif added two hits, two runs scored and an RBI.
In Reese’s second contest of the day, Beaverton got the best of them, handing them a 16-6 defeat.
McKenzie Coulter was saddled with the loss in that one, allowing three earned runs on nine hits.
At the dish it was Reif who pounded out two hits, two RBI and scored two runs while Kelsie Reszke tacked on two hits, an RBI and a run scored. Paige Smith also made her presence felt in the lineup by totaling three RBI on two hits.
In the Rockets tournament finale they came up short to Clinton, 8-2.
Reif plated one run on two hits while Smith added an RBI. Hagen also had a hit.
On the bump it was Herbolsheimer who got the start. She allowed eight earned runs on eight hits before giving way to Shluckbier, who closed out the game.
