MIDLAND — Two neighboring rivals put their talents on display at a neutral site Saturday.
The Millington and Vassar varsity baseball teams traveled to Dow Diamond, home of the Great Lakes Loons, where they played a pair of thrilling contests.
In game one, it was the scenario that every kid dreams of.
Two outs, bases loaded, bottom of the seventh inning.
Landon Zwerk’s at-bat during the Vulcans last at-bat wasn’t as glamorous as one might think. But Zwerk did face that exact scenario.
Instead of coming through with a game-winning hit, Zwerk drew a game-winning walk which scored the winning run for the Vulcans, sealing the 18-17 victory for Vassar.
Zwerk’s patience at the plate also completed the Vulcans outstanding comeback from a 17-8 deficit.
Zwerk finished the game 2-for-3 with a pair of walks, three runs scored and an RBI while Gavin Greer finished the opener with a single, a walk, an RBI and two runs scored. Tanner MacKay had two singles, three runs scored and an RBI in the win.
Vassar’s Nathan Greaves was named the winning pitcher in the offensive slugfest.
Millington’s offense was led by Jay Cole, who had two hits, two runs scored and three RBI while Cory Rich went 3-for-5 with four RBI, two runs scored and two stolen bases.
Game two of their doubleheader was just as close.
As a matter of fact, it was closer.
The two teams exchanged blows until they were forced to call the nightcap at a 6-6 tie after their time limit at Dow Diamond was up.
The Vulcans entered the top of the seventh inning trailing Millington 5-2 before hanging four runs in the seventh inning, helping them take a 6-5 lead. The Cardinals then scored a run in what would be their final at bat, to deadlock the game at six runs apiece.
On the mound, Vassar’s Matt Shoemate got the nod while Corey Paquette pitched all five innings for the Cardinals.
Millington was led by Lucas Beck, who went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored while Bryce Byerley had two hits and a run scored. Colin Meacham had a single, a double, two RBI and a run scored.
Zac Case had a pair of hits, two runs driven in and a run scored to pace Vassar while Greer added three hits, an RBI and a run scored to his total. Kevin Pratt went 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored.
Reese splits at Pinconning Invite
PINCONNING — Reese’s varsity team got the best of both worlds on Saturday when they took part in the annual Pinconning Invitational.
The Rockets started the tournament by snagging a 4-1 win over Clare. Jacob Purman earned the win on the mound after striking out six and allowing one hit through five innings.
Cody Peyok had three hits and an RBI to pace the Rockets while Travis Menapace drove in two runs.
However, Reese ended the day with a sour taste in their mouths after dropping a tough contest to host Pinconning, 15-4.
Caleb Camero, Matt Sahr, Tucker Schumacher, Bouvy and Menapace all logged innings on the mound in the loss. Menapace got the start, going just over two innings and allowing seven hits before giving way to Camero.
Bouvy added two hits, an RBI and a run scored to his total for the day while Trevor Volz drove in two runs with a single. Drew Thompson had an RBI as well.
