HURON COUNTY — As suspected, the man and woman found dead Nov. 29 of a murder – suicide in a motel in Mason have officially been identified as a Port Hope couple.
A forensic examination determined the bodies found were former Bad Axe Chief of Police Gary E. Bucholtz, 58, and his wife, Rhonda L. Bucholtz, 38, of Port Hope.
Evidence indicates Gary Bucholtz shot Rhonda Bucholtz and then shot himself.
Because of the extent of the wounds, a forensic examination to positively identify the victims was necessary.
The Mason Police Department report conclusion is that, Gary likely confronted Rhonda in the Port Hope home, “where a struggle followed, and extracted her against her will.”
Evidence also indicates she was secured by restraints and concealed inside the vehicle before it fled the scene.
The case began when the Huron County Sheriff’s Department was contacted by family members because the couple was missing and there were some marital problem issues.
When the couple could not be located, a state-wide bulletin was issued to-be-on-the look out for them. Based on the description, the Mason Police Department contacted Huron County officials and informed them that the murder – suicide case that they were working on could be the couple they sought.
