Marlette football sneak peak

Marlette (3-6, 3-3 GTE)

Week 1: Aug. 29 at Reese (2-7)

Last season, in the first meeting of the two schools since 2009, the Rockets opened their season with one of the two wins they’d capture in 2018 (by a score of 27-7). Since 1950, Reese holds the series edge 4-3.

Week 2: Sept. 6 at Harbor Beach (11-2)

Although they didn’t know it at the time, the Red Raiders’ 20-14 Week 2 win over Harbor Beach would be possibly the biggest upset in the Thumb Area. The Pirates would go on to win 10 consecutive games, and would not lose until they were one game away from playing for a Division 8 state championship at Ford Field in Detroit. Harbor Beach shared a Greater Thumb East Conference championship with Sandusky before losing to Breckenridge in the state semifinals.

Week 3: Sept. 13 vs Cass City (8-3)

Before the two divisions of the Greater Thumb Conference were founded in 1997, the Red Hawks and Red Raiders spent decades as rivals in the Thumb C Conference. Last year, the two squads met for the first time since 2007 with Cass City capturing a 40-14 victory. There is some playoff history between the two teams. The Red Hawks downed Marlette 14-8 in the first round of the 2014 Division 7 postseason. Cass City holds a hefty 39-15-2 advantage in the series.

Week 4: Sept. 20 vs. Memphis (1-8)

Since joining the GTE in 2012, the Yellowjackets have struggled. Marlette has gone 7-0 as a league rival, and Memphis is just 2-34 in the conference since joining. That being said, Memphis had its best offensive output of the last three years in last season’s 47-24 loss to Marlette.

Week 5: Sept. 27 vs. Sandusky (8-2)

The Redskins rolled through the regular season until a Week 8 loss to Harbor Beach cost them an outright GTE title. Sandusky began the 2018 season with seven consecutive wins, one of which was over the Red Raiders (28-0). The Redskins went 5-1 in league play to tie for first with Harbor Beach, and qualified for the playoffs where they lost in the first round to Cass City. The two have faced off every year since at least 1950, with the Redskins holding a 42-23-3 mark in that time.

Week 6: Oct. 4 at Brown City (3-6)

The last two Marlette/Brown City matchups have been down to the wire and decided by one score, with the Red Raiders winning 35-28 last year and Brown City coming out on top 28-20 in 2017. In 1976, the two teams met for the first time when the Green Devils won 43-0 in the final game of the regular season. They didn’t face off again until 1997 with the formation of the GTE. Since, Brown City holds a 12-10 advantage.

Week 7: Oct. 11 at Capac (2-7)

From 1969-75, Marlette and Capac played a non-conference game in the final week of the regular season. The rivalry was renewed with a non-league season-opener in 2017, and in 2018 the Chiefs joined the GTE. Of Capac’s two wins last year, one was by a 44-23 decision over Marlette.

Week 8: Oct. 18 vs. Ubly (8-3)

The Bearcats have won four consecutive matchups in the series, while averaging more than 48 points per game. The Red Raiders put up a fight in last year’s game before succumbing 40-27 to Ubly, which is 16-6 all-time against Marlette.

Week 9: Oct. 25 at Armada (2-7)

Marlette and Armada have hooked up in the regular-season finale each year since 2012, with the Red Raiders winning four. The seven meetings are the only times the two have met. Last year, Armada won 6-0.
