(1-8, 0-6 GTW)
Week 1: Aug. 29 at Imlay City (1-8)
The Vulcans will look to put a disappointing 2018 behind them with their first matchup against Imlay City since 1988, when both schools were members of the Thumb B conference. Imlay City has struggled in recent years, going 13-77 over the past 10 seasons. Vassar is 3-2 all-time against the Spartans.
Week 2: Sept. 6 vs. Bad Axe (4-5)
This will be the third consecutive year the Vulcans have opened Greater Thumb West play with Bad Axe. Vassar won in 2016 and ‘17, but the Hatchets captured a 50-14 victory last year. The Vulcans have won the all-time series 27-25.
Week 3: Sept. 13 vs. Reese (2-7)
The Rockets have won five games the past two years. Two of them were against Vassar. Through the years, this matchup has been one-sided with the Rockets holding an 18-5 all-time edge. Vassar enjoyed success against Reese a couple of years ago, winning 35-6 in 2014 and 38-0 in 2015, but the series has largely been dominated by the Rockets, who won 28-0 last season to pick up their only GTW win.
Week 4: Sept. 20 vs. Caro (4-5)
Since 1950, Vassar has faced Caro more times than any other school. When Caro joined the GTW last year, it became the fourth time the Vulcans and Tigers were conference rivals (1951 and before in the Upper Thumb, from 1952 to 1990 in the Thumb B Association and from 1991 to 2007 in the Tri-Valley Conference East). Last year, Caro won 49-7 and the Tigers are 40-23-2 all-time against the Vulcans.
Week 5: Sept. 27 at Cass City (8-3)
Cass City has enjoyed success the past few years, contending for a conference title and qualifying for the playoffs the last five years. Last year, the Red Hawks downed Vassar 54-12, part of a 7-2 regular season. Cass City downed then-8-1 Sandusky in the first round of the playoffs before losing to eventual Division 7 state champion New Lothrop in the second round. The Vulcans are 24-28 against Cass City since 1950.
Week 6: Oct. 4 vs. Sandusky (9-2)
The Redskins were cruising to an undefeated regular season and Greater Thumb East championship before getting derailed by Harbor Beach in Week 8. One of the wins was against the Vulcans, 58-24. Since 1950, Vassar holds the edge on the Redskins with a 20-13-3 record.
Week 7: Oct. 11 at Laker (7-3)
Over the past three years, Laker has outscored Vassar 172-30. But the Vulcans have held their own all-time against the Lakers with a 22-20 record. Laker has advanced to the state playoffs in five of the last six years, making it to the Division 7 quarterfinals twice in that time.
Week 8: Oct. 18 at USA (4-5)
Prior to Vassar leaving the Tri-Valley East in 2007 and joining the GTW in 2008, the two teams had not met on the football field. Which saved the Vulcans from having to play the Patriots in their state championship years of 1998 and 2004. USA has won the last three yearly contests, but the Vulcans won the previous eight matchups between the two.
Week 9: Oct. 25 vs. Otisville-LakeVille (0-9)
The Vulcans escaped a winless season by downing LakeVille 41-19 in Week 9 last year. Despite the proximity of the two schools, they have faced off just three times – all Vassar wins.
