The family of Wilma Ruth Peterson Christian announces with great sadness the loss our beloved sister and aunt who died peacefully on April 16, 2019, in Grants Pass, Oregon at the age of 94. She passed away at home surrounded by her children and her lovely gardens bursting with color from her legendary irises and extremely fragrant roses that she nurtured over the years.
Wilma was born in Caro on January 23, 1925, to Carl and Oril Peterson. She was confirmed in 1938 at the Methodist Episcopal Church. She graduated from Caro High School in 1943, went to County Normal and taught at the Conner School for two years. In 1946, she left Caro to be a missionary in Southern Rhodesia with the Methodist Church and lived most of her life in California and Oregon. She was a lifelong learner, an eternal optimist and a mentor to many. In 2006, she became a Master Gardener in Oregon mentoring over 650 students. She dedicated many hours to this program, and she was selected as the 2014 Josephine County Master Gardener of the Year. She was an active member of the Spiritual Living Center of Grants Pass and became an Emeritus Practitioner. Wilma is survived by her seven children; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; sisters: Carol Piske and Frances LaJoie; and many nieces and nephews.
