William Henry Durkee of Vassar, age 83, passed away Sunday morning, April 7, 2019, at the Tuscola County Medical Care Facility after a brief illness. He was born on April 16, 1935, in Flint, the son of the late Lloyd and Edith (Irwin) Durkee. On November 28, 1964, he was united in marriage to Jane E. Priestley and after 54 years together she survives him. Bill was a longtime member of the Vassar First United Methodist Church, where he was the custodian for 27 years. He was an avid stamp and coin collector and enjoyed model trains. Bill could always be found helping his elderly neighbors with their lawn mowing and snow blowing.

Surviving family include his wife, Jane and daughter, Deelynn; a sister-in-law, Ann Larner; and several nieces and nephews. Bill was preceded in death by his son, Kenneth and two brothers, Earl and Robert.

A memorial service will be at noon on Wednesday, April 24, 2019, at the Vassar First United Methodist Church. The Rev. Scott Sherrill will officiate. The family will greet friends at the church on Wednesday, April 24, 2019, from 11 a.m. until the time of the service. Private burial took place at Riverside Cemetery. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to the Vassar First United Methodist Church – Children’s Activities and Choir or the Bullard Sanford Memorial Library. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Penzien-Steele Funeral Home in Vassar.
