Daniel D. Thayer of Gray, age 74, died Monday afternoon, December 17, 2018, at his daughter’s home in Charlevoix, after a short battle with gastric cancer. He was born October 14, 1944, in Gilford Township, Tuscola County, son of the late Robert Wales and Leora (Spencer) Thayer. On February 4, 1967, he married the former Susan K. Woizeschke in Reese. She predeceased him July 4, 2006. Dan was employed for several years at American Hoist in Bay City before moving to Grayling in 1977. While living in Grayling, he founded Thayer Machine Shop which he owned and operated for many years. Dan was an avid outdoorsman, gun collector, and fisherman. His passion for big game hunting had him traveling in both the U.S and Canada. He served his country with the Michigan National Guard. His memberships included the NRA and Safari Club International.
Surviving are his children: Senator Damon Thayer of Georgetown, Kentucky, and Dena Thayer of Charlevoix; four grandchildren: Spencer Kilpatrick of Traverse City, Case Kilpatrick of Levering, Daniel Spencer Thayer and Katie Marie Thayer, both of Georgetown, Kentucky; two sisters: Patricia “Patsy” Thayer of Gilford and Carole Jacques of Caro; his mother-in-law, Rose Woizeschke of Reese; and his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Mary and Louis Pierce of Reese. In addition to his wife and parents, Dan was predeceased by two brothers, Robert and Donald Thayer and his sister, Wilma Razek.
A Memorial Service to celebrate Dan’s life will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday, December 22, 2018, from the Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Home, 9940 Saginaw St. in Reese. Mr. Thayer’s family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. His cremains will be buried next to his wife Sue, at a later date, in the Gilford Township Cemetery.
