Charles William Carpenter

Charles William Carpenter of Deford, age 81, passed away on Thursday, July 19, 2018 at Covenant Medical Center – Harrison in Saginaw. Charlie was born July 22, 1936 on the family farm in Caro, the son of the late Merrill & Alice (Cutler) Carpenter. He graduated from Caro High School with the class of 1954 and later attended Michigan State University for an agricultural short-course. He was united in marriage with the former Marilyn Cargill on September 19, 1959 in Marlette. Charlie was drafted to the US Army in 1959 where he was stationed in Germany, serving until his honorable discharge in 1962. Upon his return from the service, he and Marilyn moved to Deford and spent the remainder of his life there. Charlie was a lifelong farmer and farrier and served as a weighmaster at several stockyards in the thumb area. He always enjoyed being around children and he adored his grandchildren. Charlie was a 4th generation horseman and was a charter member of the first horse club in Tuscola County. He could also be found at several coffee groups around town where he enjoyed socializing and reminiscing. Charlie was a great story-teller to anyone willing to listen, as he believed some stories were worth repeating.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of fifty-eight years, Marilyn Carpenter of Deford; three children and their spouses, Carrie & Darren Oxford of Parrish, Florida, Julie & Brian Moore of Deford, Mike & Tracy Carpenter of Caro; six grandchildren and their spouses, Jessica & Jason Schmidt of North Branch, Nicholas & Kristin Moore of Saginaw, Andrea Oxford and her fiancé, Drew, of St. Petersburg, Florida, Ryan Oxford and his special friend, Becky, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Stephanie Carpenter of Davison, Mandy Carpenter of Caro; six great-grandchildren, Madelynn, Braelynn, Abigail, Lennon, Kaitlynn and Jacob; sister- and brothers-in-law, Jean & Ron Weirauch of Flushing, Lee Cargill of Wesley Chapel, Florida; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Charlie was preceded in death by his sisters-in-law, Alberta O’Dell and Patricia Cargill.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 22, 2018 at the Ransford Collon Funeral Home in Caro with Rev. Brad Speirs officiating. Burial will follow at the Indianfields Township Cemetery on Walk Road in Caro. The family will be present to receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and on Sunday from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the service at 2:00 p.m. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorial contributions to the Tuscola County 4-H.
