VASSAR — Unfortunately, Mother Nature had different plans in store again this year for the city’s second Chill on the Hill.
The Chill on the Hill’s planning committee decided during its final meeting last Wednesday to cancel the event for 2013, said organizer Adam Barden.
“We looked ahead at the forecast and saw a few warmer days during the week prior to the event,” Barden said. “It didn’t look like we would have enough snow to hold it again this year.”
Many community members and business leaders have worked to plan this year’s event since October, Barden explained.
Organizers hope to focus on ways to make this event successful even if the weather does not cooperate in future years. The Chill on the Hill event was also canceled last year due to warmer temperatures and lack of snow.
“We are looking into a few options including ways to get a snow machine of some kind,” Barden said. “I think that is our ultimate solution. We just need to get some cost estimates and look at how we could make that happen.”
Several sponsors from the business community also contributed in order to make this event happen, Barden added.
This year’s Polar Bear sponsors included; Cook GM, ITC, Larsen Graphics, Vassar Chamber of Commerce, Vassar Building Center, Vassar Downtown Development Authority, Vassar Economic Development Commission, Vassar Recycling, Vassar Rotary, Vassar True Value Hardware and Wolgast Corporation.
Penguin sponsors for 2013 are The Coffee Beanery, Frankenmuth Credit Union, McDonalds, Rowe Engineering and Wolverine Human Services and Snowflake sponsors included Blossom Chiropractic, Catholic Federal Credit Union, Chase Bank, Emil Rummel Agency, Goforth Ceramic Tile, Heritage Hill Assisted Living, Martin Funeral Home, Mid-State Title Services, Shriji Physical Therapy, Timber Oaks Landscaping and Vassar Historical Society.
“I would like to thank all of our generous sponsors that stepped forward to help make this event happen,” Barden said.
Shirts, which were already printed for the event, will be for sale at Vassar City Hall. Anyone interested in purchasing a sweatshirt, or T-shirt should contact city hall at (989) 823-8517.
“The Chill on the Hill will return in 2014,” Barden added. “Once we have snow, we will have an exciting event for all ages. See you next February.”
The Chill on the Hill Planning Committee will begin meeting in late September or October to begin discussing the 2014 event.
