DENMARK TWP. — A Sebewaing man avoided injury Thursday when he failed to stop for a flashing railroad crossing sign on M-46 and a northbound freight train struck a trailer he was hauling. The driver of the train also was uninjured.
The crash occurred shortly before noon. Billy Harold Reese, 56 of Sebewaing, was eastbound on M-46 near Bradford Road hauling an empty double-bottom gravel train. Denmark Township Police chief Fred Hecht said Reese did not see the flashing railroad sign as a Huron and Eastern Railway train approached heading northwest. Hecht said a witness reported seeing the crossing lights activated and hearing the engineer sound the train’s horn.
The impact smashed the second trailer called a pup, and Reese was able to bring the truck and remaining trailer safely to a stop on the shoulder. Hecht said Reese was cited for failure to stop at a flashing railroad crossing.
Denmark Township Police handled the investigation.
