This past weekend I attended the 8th Annual Baja Brawl in Millington, and let me tell you, it was a very cool experience.
Now, this is not my first time around the world of motocross and supercross. I once dated a local girl who's family was very much into professional motocross as well as supercross and freestyle events. So, I of course tagged along to see what all the hype was about.
We went to a freestyle event at the Pontiac Silverdome and it was a very cool experience for someone who felt almost out of the loop.
But all the stories, all the pictures and all the hype finally made sense this past weekend.
With over 5,000 spectators and over 1,500 riders attending this year's Brawl, it was really something special. The atmosphere on both Sunday and Monday when I was there was just outrageous. The families. The Riders. the fans. The sponsors. And most of all, the passion for the sport.
These guys and girls just loved to ride. Period.
And they were all there to get their fix, all while promoting the extreme sports world.
I know Baja is no X-games, but I've always kind of been drawn to the action sports. Maybe its because I am not talented enough to them. Who knows. All I know is that there was some REAL talented riders there this weekend looking to make it big. Hopefully, they do, and more "Niko Izzi's" can come back and continue to build on the tradition that already is Baja Acres.
This was also my first trip to Baja, and I want to say thank you guys for being so cool and letting me roam where I may, it was a pleasure to work with Corey Bixby who really hooked me up with all the information and suggestions I needed.
My only regret on this event was that I did not camp out at Baja and enjoy all four days of the event.
Like I said, the passion in this sport is REAL! Yes, it is competitive, but at the same time, these guys and girls are family, all striving for the same goal. And really, It's a beautiful thing.
- Also, as I mentioned in the story....... if you haven't already, check out www.bajaacres.com Very cool website. And, for more of my pictures from my time at the Baja Brawl..... go to myspace.com/tcasports.
So with this, I will try to turn over a new page in my second year as Sports Editor of the Advertiser. Yes, I am going to try blogging more. Hopefully, I can continue my "Sports - Week in Review" column on here, bringing you my opinions on all local and statewide sports, as well as what is happening in the big picture around the nation. The sporting world is now hitting the web harder than ever, and I want to try and do my part to be a part of that movement as much as possible. The online sporting scene is also blowing up locally. So if you haven't already, check out all the local blogsites such as www.tuscolacountysports.blogspot.com. From there, your possibilities are endless.
Until next time........
