Changes are a step in the right direction, just a little late.

The wheels of change are in motion at Frankenmuth High School, and I’m sure some members of the community could not be happier.

In the November 15 edition of the Advertiser, i wrote a column voicing my opinion on the new policy and how I felt that it was unfair to the student athletes that wanted to put in the time and effort. Apparently my voice, along with many others was heard.

I know that I also wrote in an online blog respons to the column, that I would also speak no more about the policy. However, with change, comes a voice.

The people of Frankenmuth should be thrilled that the policy did not become forgotten, and that the board of education took the time to review this policy.

The question is, what took so long?

Why was it that the board took this long to review the policy, and why was it not taken into consideration on July 14, 2008, the day the board accepted the resignation letter of former boys varsity basketball coach Tim Crawford?

Not only should this of been reviewed then, but the board passed up yet another opportunity when varsity volleyball coach Sharon Bade chose to walk.

Do not get me wrong, I feel this is a great step in the right direction and people need to be happy that changes are being made. But is the damage already done?

For Frankenmuth’s sake, I hope not.

I’ve seen a lot come out of that school that has impressed me over the past few years. From Brad Redford and the List twins, to Nicole Bade and the numerous dominant girls teams to come through year after year. Frankenmuth was really starting to make a name for themselves. Not only in the Thumb, but statewide as well.

But something is different about the school and their sporting events now, and I recently felt it the other night at a Frankenmuth basketball game.

What was it?

I’m not sure.

I personally, do not think it’s too late for Frankenmuth athletics to recover from their fall back. I think Frankenmuth still has plenty to look foward to.

After losing Mr. Basketball and his supporting cast to graduation, Frankenmuth boys basketball has plenty to be excited about with first-year coach Seth LaBair and his talented squad. They may be 1-4, but don’t let that fool you. With a brutal non-conference schedule behind them, look for them to post some numbers in the win column.

Alongside the boys, Tom Keller and the girls basketball team are currently sitting at the top of the TVC-East with one of the best post players in the area in Jenny McCain.

The sad part is, the excitement in the student section has almost left completely. You would think that with the first-ever Advertiser Student Section award up for grabs, they would be crazier than ever!

OK, now that I’ve plugged the award...

Eagles fan’s go nuts, and get out and support your teams. Not only do you still have talented squad’s taking the floor every Tuesday and Friday night, but the schools administration is now hearing your voice more than ever.
