OK, I know what some of you are thinking, This is a Tuscola county sports blog, and I hear you. Although, sports is sports, and I want to talk real quick about some things that are bothering me as of late.
#1- The dead period. We as sports fans in the state of Michigan take a lot of pride in our teams and their success. However, right now is the worst time. The Tigers are not going to make the playoffs, U of M is struggling, MSU has a running back- that’s about it, and The Lions are.....well.....the Lions. We have fallen on hard times where we are just sitting and waiting for the Pistons and Red Wings to start. Just be patient, they are right around the corner. The Red Wings start training camp in just three days.
#2- Well....The Lions. Why? Why do we invest in this team every year? It’s been said and I think it’s a must. Change with that organization starts in the front office. Everyone wants to put Jon Kitna on the chopping block. To that I say, take a step back people. The Lions have said that they want their game plan to be a run first team. Well, when you fall behind 21-0 in the first half, or even first quarter, you have to throw your game plan out of the window. You have to make Kitna throw the ball, and the minute that ball leaves his hand, the amount of risk in turning the ball over sky rockets. So when you throw the ball as many times as Kitna did against the Packers, those things will happen. I am not taking him off of the hook for three picks in what, five minutes?
Other people keep saying we need a quarterback who is more mobile. Really? Let’s take a look at the Minnesota Vikings. A definite run first team who still can’t win with a mobile quarterback who could be asked to throw 20 times a game. Then after that, they bench him, because he still is not producing and the Vikings go to a more "Kitna like" quarterback. If you were to put Jon Kitna on any other team but the Lions, he would easily lead that team to a 10 win season, maybe plus some.
#3- Cupcakes or Hard Knocks?
What’s your opinion on college teams scheduling such easy games in the first few weeks, or hammering their schedule with tough teams right off of the bat.
Yes, I am a U of M football fan, however, we know what U of M is capable of now. They have shown us their weaknesses and played some teams that exploited those weaknesses. With MSU, they have played two cake teams and all they have shown us is that Javon Ringer is a freak. I know they played Cal and got it handed to them. But like I said. All we know is that Ringer is good, we get it. Hopefully we will find out what State is really made of come this weekend against ND.
#4- What’s your season?
A lot of people get so geeked over the start of football. I get it, I enjoy sitting around all weekend and watching nothing but football. I am also a huge fantasy football nut. But I ask you Tuscola County, what is your favorite time of year for sports? Is it opening day of baseball? Is it New Years for those exciting bowl games and Super Bowl right around the corner? Maybe its the NHL playoffs? Or October Baseball? March Madness? GUILTY!Nothing is better than March Madness in my opinion. That is oh so far away, so for now, I will just monitor my numerous fantasy football teams while I continue to yell at the television. Happy Watching.

The first couple of weeks of the basketball season are interesting. Teams starting out fresh, getting the feel of how the season will go. Spectators watching closely, seeing some veterans and novices, judging, speculating, rating. Everyone having the feeling their team is going to make the big run this year. Exciting
