For nearly a year I've repeatedly said "No Spud!", "No bite!" and "Down!" so much that I feel like I say it in my sleep.
I probably don't even think about it anymore, it just comes out of my mouth with less thought than telling my lungs to breath.
Well, something amazing has happened. My little schnauzer is listening to me.
I don't know when it began to happen. It might have been a month ago, it might have been yesterday.
Just one day I began to notice that I haven't been reprimanding him as much, and when I do, he immediately backs off with a look like "Oh geeze mom, I didn't mean to, really I didn't."
I'm so excited about this new phase that I just want people to come and visit so I can say "No Spud, get down," and watch him sit like the good little schnauzer I always knew he could be.
What's even better is my work shoes are no longer under attack and can sit by the door without running the risk of becoming a chew toy when I'm not looking.

    jsicotte (Jon Sicotte) says...

I'm on the other spectrum...Geneo (14 yr old Maltese for those that don't know) stares off into space when I talk to him.
Kinda like my wife...but I deserve it from her!!
I was convinced that Geneo was deaf...so while he was sleeping on the bed, I snuck up behind him and clapped my hands a few times about a foot away from him.
He popped up...so I know he's just faking it when I yell for him to come in from outside.
