Jan 6 - An economic stimulus plan of about $775 billion is the first of business for the House and Senate and something U.S. financial markets have already priced in.
While passage of the stimulus plan is expected to happen within a matter of weeks after Barack Obama assumes the presidency, it may take far longer for the jobs to materialize in sufficient numbers to restore consumer confidence and spending, which is the foundation of the U.S. economy.

Jan 03 - Israel's military offensive in Gaza ignites an interational wave of protests.
Demonstrations have been taking place in countries in the Middle East, Asia and Europe to urge an end to Israel's military strikes on Gaza that have claimed the lives of more than 400 Palestinians.
At least four Israelis have also been killed in rocket attacks by Palestinian militants which triggered the Israeli offensive.

Dec 27 - At least 200 people have been killed after Israeli bombers launched a series of air strikes against key targets in the Gaza Strip.
Israeli military forces have launched a series of air strikes in the Gaza Strip signalling a move closer to invading the territory.
Missiles hit security compounds and militant bases killing at least two-hundred people.
Israel said Hamas terror operatives were the target of the strike, but Hamas says those killed were mostly civilians.
World leaders responding to the attacks have called for an immediate ceasefire.

Dec 25 - Pope Benedict calls for an end to child abuse.
The pontiff made his appeal as he led the world's Roman Catholics into Christmas with a midnight mass.
Pope Benedict has repeatedly raised the issue of child abuse by Catholic clergy this year.
In the U.S. he met with victims who had been sexually abused by priests and made a public apology over the issue during a trip to Australia.

Dec. 13 - Britain's Prime Minister Gordon Brown has condemned the Taliban for using a child suicide bomber in an attack which killed three British troops.
Military and government sources said Britain has reinforced its 8,100 forces in Afghanistan with about 300 troops to press a campaign against the Taliban in the area around Lashkar Gah, the provincial capital of southern Helmand province.
British forces took heavy casualties in Helmand on Friday (December 12), when four troops were killed, one by a roadside bomb and three by a young suicide bomber.
