Also, I'd like to make a correction. Someone recently informed me that this rivalry dates back further than 1955. Although, the records that I based my facts on go back to 1950 and show that the first meeting between Millington and Vassar was in 1955. I apologize.
It has been a while since I've been on here to check out what the latest discussions are. But, I was told that not too long ago there was some local sports talk taking place. Well, I took the opportunity to answer some very common questions that I get asked as Sports Editor, as well as address some of the concerns that Caro sporting fans have. To read more about this, buzz over to my blog here on tuscolatoday.com.
Jon Jones, How can you say Coach Walker is all talk and no show when he hasn't even coached a game yet? I must say, I think he is doing an excellent job to get kids excited about Kingston football. He is even getting kids who are natural athletes that didn't play football because they disliked Coach Rea, to buy back into the program and come out for the team. I stayed for the whole practice, and the kids were intense. I also spoke with a member of the Kingston Coaching staff after the 9am practice the next morning and he said that practice held the same intensity level as the one before. I just think you need to take a step back and realize what Coach Walker is dealing with before you throw him on the hot seat.
Two teams from the Greater Thumb West conference make it to the MHSAA Softball State Finals, and not one mention of it can make the "Sound Off" Board. Reese and USA brought a lot of pride to the Thumb area this past weekend, and I would like to think that it could be talked about for weeks to come. I'm hoping this page is for more than just complaints and negative news. Let's show these teams that they are appreciated.
I too do not think this is right. I would of like to see both title games played on Sunday, however, that was the decision that was made, and that's what I report:)
- bigshot - It should be noted that the Thumb Sportswriters Association bases their votes on the regular season only. So the fact that USA beat Brown City in the regional finals is somewhat irrelevant. You could look at it this way too, USA split the GTW title with Bay City All Saints whereas Brown City won the East outright.
I did not post the voting results for the boys, but the fact is AJ Burton had 19 points, and Bitzer finished with 18 points. (Based on a voting process - 3 points for first place vote, 2 points for second...etc.)
Also, every sports writer entitled to their own vote, has their own process behind a vote. Some people felt because Bitzer missed the first 9 games of the season, he didn't deserve the award over someone who played the entire season.
Again, as I said in my story, the guys team was a ton harder to pick than the girls team. To some people we may not have gotten the first team right, but in my opinion, you really can't go wrong.
Ty has done an excellent job at getting his kids to buy into the program, as well as investing time and effort into getting Caro Basketball back to where it needs to be. I agree that Wrestling, as of right now, may be the Winter Sport of choice. But i also think, that Caro cranks out enough solid athletes to where someday, both basketball and wrestling can be programs to watch out for.
