Derek was raised in the Upper Peninsula and attended Northern Michigan University for Media Production and New Technology.

A lifelong sports, music and movie fan, Derek is a huge fan of U of M and Detroit sports teams.

Derek and his wife Jennie, a Guidance Counselor at Caro High School, moved to Caro in August 2008, and both love their new life in the Thumb.
