Passed away on Friday, Oct. 30, 2009 at Select Specialties Hospital, at the age of 69. He was born on Jan. 27, 1940 in Cass City to the late Joseph and Martha (Harrison) Harbec. Tom lived much of his life in Tuscola County with the exception of a stint in Detroit. He was a Cass City High School graduate and attended a computer training school. On June 15, 1960, Tom was united in marriage with the former Christine Zawerucha at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Wilmot. While living in Detroit he was an owner/operator of a Twin Pines milk route. The majority of his work life was as a computer operator for the Bay Arenac Intermediate School District. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Tom was an avid hunter and fisherman, enjoying the out-of-doors. He is survived by his wife, Tina; his twin children, Mark Harbec and his partner, Paul Streckmann of Milwaukee, WI, Melissa (Jay) Laney of Canton; two grandchildren, Grace and Jillian Laney at home; one sister, Pat (Bob) Hunter of Cass City; two aunts and an uncle, Francis Hrabec of Cass City, Florence Prichard of Detroit and Bill Harrison of Florida and several nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister and brother-in-law, Judy and Jim Knechtel, as well as his remaining aunts and uncles. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 3 at 11 a.m., at Collon Funeral Home in Caro with Rev. Dennis Kucharczyk officiating. In accordance with Tom’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Visitation will be at Collon Funeral Home in Caro on Tuesday from 9 a.m. until time of service at 11 a.m. Memorials may be made to American Lung Association of Michigan.
