Edward L. Broadworth, Fairgrove

1939 - 2008

Passed away Thursday, May 22, 2008 in his home in Quanicassee after a long illness, at the age of 69. Ed was born to Lottie and Frank Broadworth in Gilford on May 14, 1939.

He joined the Army Reserves in 1956 and two years later entered into active duty. He spent one year in Korea and was then stationed at Ft. Devens, MA. In 1963 he returned to Fairgrove and became one of the best mechanics in town.

After a few years, Ed became a member of the Fairgrove Fire Department, and eventually became Chief. During this time he was instrumental in acquiring a new water tanker, grass pumper and ensured that all of the volunteers were fully trained in the latest lifesaving techniques.

Ed was also a member of the Fairgrove Police Department and became Chief also. Ed eventually took over the position of the Dept. of Public Works and was the key person who maintained all the roads, sidewalks and parks for the village. He was also prominent in installing and maintaining the village’s new sewer system.

He retired from Fairgrove and moved to Glennie, and then later to Quanicassee. Ed loved the outdoors, hunting and fishing, especially with his four grandchildren.

Ed is survived by his wife, Joanne (Montgomery) of Fairgrove.

He was preceded in death by his mother (1952) and father (1967) and brother Ralph (2004) and sister Francis St. Onge (2006).

He is missed dearly by his sister, Betsy Campbell of Caro; sisters-in-law, Stella Broadworth of Texas, Maxine Martin of Bay City; ex-wife, Jean (Botkins) Broadworth of Oklahoma; his son, Clifton and wife Betsy; grandchildren, Shannon and Glenn of Oklahoma; step-sons, Brent Maguire of Tennessee, Duane and wife Erin Maguire of Fairgrove and step-daughter, Denise and husband Wade; grandchildren, Casey and Bryce MacFarlane of Fairgrove and many nieces and nephews.

Ed requested his body be cremated and no services were to be held. His ashes will be spread at the place he loved to hunt the most, near Ontonagon, MI.
