Poultry plant to proceed

CASS CITY — Construction on a poultry processing plant is scheduled to begin soon.

The Cass City village council approved an Industrial Facilities Tax Exemption for the owners of L & L Poultry during its regular meeting Monday evening, which will mean 10 new jobs for the area.

“It’s very exciting,” said Cass City village manager Peter Cristiano. “Construction on the building should begin soon.”

The processing plant, L & L Poultry, owned by Leanne Liu and Steven Liang will be building an 8,000-square-foot facility located in the industrial park.

With the approved tax exemption, the plant owners will receive a tax abatement of 50 percent on the value of the building and equipment for the next 12 years.

Cass City Community Development Director Kevin Mackey said the plant will be processing 100,000 birds a year, with 25,000 squabs alone. Liu and Lang plan to process mainly African Gray geese, ducks, chickens and squab.

The owners will also be looking for farmers interested in raising the birds.

“That is the fascinating part,” he said. “They produce their own babies and contract people to raise them.

“They will provide the babies and the feed.”

Mackey added if the owners raise a minimum number of birds, the USDA provides an on-site inspector.

“So that is another job,” he said. “The inspector is on-site, all the time it’s processing.”

Cristiano said he couldn’t be happier to have ten more jobs added in the area.

“We have a lot of exciting things going on,” Cristiano said. “It’s one at a time that we try to add jobs.”

I think it's great that new business is coming into the thumb, instead of leaving it. It will give new jobs and blood to the place, as well as help local farmers.

Sounds like two different businesses to me. I'm not interested in having a poultry operation housing hundreds or thousands of birds next door. No offense to farmers, but oh the smell.

On the other hand I've raised my own and may again now that Westover Wild Wings is just around the corner. 50-75 birds around for a couple months doesn't create too severe an odor problem, and what good eating chicken. I don't think she'll hurt for business as a result.

Good luck to the new business owners. 10 new jobs plus.
