FAIRGROVE — Most farmers in the area are now concentrating on harvesting soybeans and sugar beets.

According to the Michigan Soybean Promotion Committee, U.S. soybean exports totaled 1.24 billion bushels and soymeal exports equaled 318 million bushels last year, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture says those exports equal about 55 percent of the soybean crop harvested in 2008.

And, an excellent soybean crop is expected this year.

“So far, it’s been a good harvest. The bushel (per acre) have been coming in good,” said Todd Humpert of Fairgrove.

“Right now, I’m working on soybeans because the corn’s still too wet. Those early frosts we had slowed down the drying process.”

Overall, there are about 72,896 acres of dry edible bean production in Huron County, about 36,962 acres in Tuscola County and 108,579 acres in Sanilac County.

Soybeans are marketed all over the world, but China is the primary buyer at about 23 percent of the total crop sold.
