Baseball Roundup: Rockets put two in win column against GTW neighbor Vassar

VASSAR — Reese shut out the Vulcans in game one, 8-0, thanks to the pitching of Travis VanAlst.

VanAlst struck out six batters and walked six while allowing two hits in his seven innings of work. VanAlst was also 2-for-2 on offense with a run scored.

Jacob Bouvy crushed a three-run homer in the bottom of the third to give the Rockets a five-run lead. Bouvy ended the game with four RBI while Kyle Yaklin scored three runs on a trio of hits.

In the nightcap, Yaklin got the 9-4 win on the mound by going four innings, striking out two and walking two while allowing four runs on eight hits.

VanAlst had a double and two runs scored to lead Reese while Bouvy went 2-for-3 with a double. Caleb Gnatkowski scored two runs on two hits.

Vassar’s Kyle Aurenhamer and Zach Germain each scored one run on one hit while Brandon Peter went 3-for-3 with a run scored.

Vassar is now 1-5 in the GTW, 8-10 overall.

Caro 2, Garber 1

ESSEXVILLE — Caro squeaked past Garber on Thursday to snag two wins in Tri-Valley East play.

The Tigers chalked up two runs in the third inning for the win thanks to a double from Caleb Licavoli that drove in two runs.

RJ Fritz got the win for Caro, striking out one and walking four while allowing one run on five hits.

In game two, it was a five-run third that gave the Tigers an early 6-0 run. But Garber did not go away quietly, tying the game up at 6-6 late in the game. Caro was able to respond with a run in the bottom of the sixth to break the tie and sweep the Dukes.

Licavoli got it done again in game two with two hits including a double and two runs scored while Mike Daniel added two hits and a run driven in. Jake Sattelberg had two hits including a double while scoring twice and knocking in two runs.

Justin O’Kelly went five and a third innings, striking out one and allowing seven runs on seven hits before Fritz came in to finish the game. Fritz allowed just one hit and struck out one to seal the win for the Tigers.

Caro is now 6-1 in the TVC East, 10-9 overall.

North Branch 8, Brown City 3

NORTH BRANCH — Daniel Jacobson allowed four hits while striking out six in seven innings of work, sealing the win in game one for North Branch.

Dennis Natke helped out at the plate by going 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored while Jacobson had two hits, an RBI and a run scored. Dean Baker added two hits while Will Orr drove in one run on one hit. Joe Clemens chalked up two hits and plated two runs.

In game two, it was Jared Laur that earned the win on the mound.

Clemens went 3-for-3 at the plate with three runs scored to lead the Broncos in game two while Ryan walker and Jared Laur each added RBI. Ryan Barrows had a hit that drove in two runs while Natke scored one run. Jacobson added two RBI and a run scored.

Port Hope 12, Akron-Fairgrove 7

FAIRGROVE — Akron-Fairgrove was led by Nick Avila who went 3-for-4 at the plate while Craig Streeter tallied two hits.

Mitch Christian suffered the loss in game one while Avila took the loss in game two.

Avila, Streeter and Matt Knephler each had a hit in the 3-2 loss.

USA 3, Bad Axe 1

USA 11, Bad Axe 0

SEBEWAING — USA posted three runs in their first at bat that stood strong until the end, to win part one of the doubleheader with Bad Axe.

Brad Little pitched the complete seven innings for the Patriots, striking out seven and walking two while allowing five hits and one run.

Heath Schmidt, Andrew Botello and Nick Eisengruber each had a hit and an RBI to lead USA at the plate while Ryan Zimmer had one run scored on one hit.

In the nightcap, Heath Schmidt allowed just one run, earning his second league win. Schmidt struck out three and walked one while allowing one hit in six innings of work.

Schmidt also helped his cause at the plate with three hits and three RBI while scoring two runs. Josh Lakie posted three hits and an RBI while Cole Anker drove in two runs on one hit. Warren Dillon had a hit and an RBI while Brandon Bitzer tallied two hits and an RBI.

USA is now 5-1 in the GTC West, 15-5 overall.
