Click that seat belt

June 24, 2009 - 12:27 p.m. EST

TUSCOLA COUNTY — Tuscola County Sheriff Lee Teschendorf advises motorists in Tuscola County that “Seat Belt Enforcement Zones” will be set up again starting June 26.

Lieutenant James Giroux, the project director for the Office of Highway Safety Planning Grant entitled “Safe Communities”, has scheduled enforcement zones for M-15 near Cottrell Road in the Vassar area for June 26.

Another portion of the traffic safety grant includes additional patrols this weekend for night time seat belt and impaired driving enforcement, as well as the addition of patrols to combat underage drinking.

Giroux said that this time of year, with graduation parties and other summer events attended by young adults where alcohol may be available, has caused concern for the safety of the motoring public.

“We would like people to have a good time and be responsible,” said Teschendorf, reminding drivers that “a blood alcohol content of .08% or more is cause to arrest the offending driver.”

Giroux also said that deputies are being sent out on patrol with a “zero tolerance” mandate for any observed seat belt or alcohol-related violations. Seat Belt Enforcement Zones will be out in the Millington area on M-15 on July 2, as well as M-24 and East Dayton Road in Caro on Friday, July 3. Mobile patrols will also be initiated during the evening hours of July 3 in an effort to seek a decline in alcohol-related deaths throughout the state.

For more information, call Lieutenant James Giroux at (989) 673-8161, ext. 5.

This is why we should never have allowed a seat belt law to be passed. Mass arrests are about as illegitimate as government gets. This is the USA not Iran.

I'm glad for the Tuscola County Deputies who will benefit from this funding. I do however find it sad that the police have to take time for seat belt enforcement. This is behavioral control through government. Don't get me wrong seat belts are important to personal safety, but that should be my choice. Not the insurance companies bribing government to control me.

Now funding to spend time watching for drunk drivers, that's another thing. I'm all for it!

Maybe the food police next to save on health care costs, never mind the fast food lobby would start a war.

Yes driving is a privilege but I don't want government making arbitrary and capricious rules. or controlling my personal behavior, when governing what is now an essential aspect of life if you don't live in large urban areas.

Now as for funding to apprehend and deter drunk driving. I'm all for it!

Purchasing a drivers lisc. gives me the right to drive on the road. Stopping me with no probable cause of committing a crime is a violation of my rights. I have a right to drive on the roads without being harrassed by police officers when I have committed no crime, and I don't need a court or judge to explain that to me. I can read and comprehend the Contstitution just fine.

I agree with bunnyman's quote by B. Franklin.

Freedom and liberty is a thing of the past for U.S. citizens. Our government is so corrupt that we no longer have freedom or rights.

Yes driving is a privilege that is not a necessity of life in rural areas. You can always get a horse and cart or bicycle. The government should have the right to revoke this privilege for whatever arbitrary and capricious reason they feel is applicable. Like if the officer just doesn't like your attitude, or whatever.

And I thought Michigan was full of liberal fascists. Maybe there is hope after all.
They take away freedom incrementally. A little at a time and before you know it you are a subject and no longer a citizen.
The seat belt laws were championed by Ralf Nader first for safety issues with older cars and insurance companies to mitigate $ paid out from injuries. While I believe it should be an individual right to protect your self or not. Ultimately, in this day and age with insurance being a requirement, the insurance companies pass the added cost of payouts due to increased injuries by non wearers to the rest of us. Just like WalMart passes on their losses from shoplifters to the rest of us through price increases to offset losses.

Same thing with health care costs. If your not doing absolutely everything possible, diet, exercise, avoiding dangerous substances (like butter)and your negatively affecting your own health, the insurance companies will pass all these costs on to the rest of us. Want health insurance? Get in lock-step with the government and outlaw all of these behaviors. Then of course you need enforcement, perhaps health police. We need government everywhere, and the police watching everyone. Without this your a dead man.

Ask Dick Cheney, no Americans died due to terrorists under his watch. Not one!

northendlou I love the police, especially the one's who tase 15 yr olds threatening to kill three of them with his bare fists. I didn't want this kid to murder them like that. I'm not that sick and that kid would have left those 3 officers dead from his beating. He could have also been seriously injured himself. I'm real sick of you making me out as a cop hater when I criticize abuse. Maybe I'm wrong, maybe cops utilizing street justice in an arbitrary and capricious way is the answer to public safety. Ya think?

By the way I live in an area that was once permeated with the Michigan Militia. Deckerville ring a bell? I'm aware of a couple guys who hung out around there before taking a trip to Oklahoma City. These are actually people who saw themselves as anything but liberal, but then what did they do really?

Some real Brainiacs posting here I'll tell ya.

Well if your not bright enough to understand sarcasm it's my fault? Corruption and guns! I'd rather have drunks with guns their just stupid, not purposeful in their actions. Do honest police exist? I'd be severely depressed to think otherwise. If they would clean up your own back yard then there would be no room for criticism. Then maybe it would be just a few roque cops acting alone. I don't expect the police to apprehend every criminal, even those they work with. Just the one's they are aware of.

Lou, if terrorist were breaking into your friend’s homes and robbing them at gun point under the guise of law you would be angry too.

Is there such a thing as the Michigan Militia? If there is a Michigan militia, were do I sign up? I’m all for it.

You say that it is unusual for people to loose their drivers lisc. You must have been a cop when people still rode horses instead of driving cars.
