VASSAR — City officials voted unanimously on Saturday to hire Big Rapids Zoning Administrator Julius Suchy to fill the city’s manager position.

A contract will be prepared by the city’s attorney. Details of the contract were not immediately available.

“I was very impressed with the young man,” said Councilman Henry Hornung. “The answers he gave were thoughtful and articulate. I think he’ll do a great job for the city.”

Hornung added that all three candidates interviewed were talented people. “There’s no question all were qualified. But when asked what he believed was important to the city, Mr. Suchy stressed the importance of bringing creative ideas to the table when it comes to the city’s growth. He also believes strongly in accountability.”

Along with Suchy, two other candidates were interviewed: Brian Palaia, current Director of Planning and Economic Development in Lenyard, CT and Michael Uskiewicz, Township Manager for the Charter Township of Port Huron.

Suchy has been the Zoning Administrator for the city of Big Rapids since May 2008. Big Rapids is located in Mecosta County and has a population of approximately 11,000.

“I found all three very well qualified,” said Councilwoman Faye Hembling. “But Mr. Suchy is very energetic and enthusiastic. He’s very straightforward, smart beyond his years.”

The search for a new city manager began in earnest last February when interim City Manger James Walker said he wanted to resume his retirement by the end of May.
