SANILAC COUNTY — Gary Gould, 47, of Croswell was released from prison last year only to return home and allegedly murder two family members.
Gould was arrested at a residence in Huron County, shortly after the slayings took place in Sanilac County. During the murder, two other people staying at the home - including Gould’s mother - were also injured in the attack.
At about 5:15 a.m. Wednesday, the Sanilac County Sheriff’s Department responded to an emergency cell phone call after that an injured female had flagged down a motorist in Fremont Township asking for help.
The victim said she had sustained injuries from an altercation at 3107 E. Mortimer Line Rd. When deputies arrived at that residence, they found the injured woman who had made the call, another injured female and two deceased males - Jacob Wurmlinger, 70, and Harry Reynolds, 68.
The female victims, who were transported to a Port Huron hospital for treatment of critical injuries, were Doreen Wurmlinger and Cynthia Reynolds. Doreen Wurmlinger is Gould’s mother and Jacob Wurmlinger’s wife.
The Reynolds, a married couple related to the Wurmlingers, were visiting from Florida.
During the investigation, it was determined a gray/brown 2008 Jeep Compass was missing from the residence, as was Gould, who reportedly had been living at the Mortimer Line Road residence since his release from prison last year.
A statewide broadcast to be on the lookout for suspect and vehicle was issued while deputies, K-9, drug task force members and police from departments in Croswell, Peck and Brown City helped search the surrounding area.
At about 7:43 a.m., Gould and the stolen vehicle was located in Huron County by sheriff deputies in the Filion area when they responded to a complaint of a possibly injured, intoxicated subject.
When Deputy Duane Miller responded to that call, he saw Gould on the opposite side of the road from where the complaint was made. He pulled into that driveway to talk to the subject. Even though Miller ordered him to stop, the subject ran into that residence, and Miller called for backup.
Huron County Lt. David Drossos, Bad Axe Police Chief Michael Anderson, Lt. David Rothe and Det. Kevin Knoblock answered the call for assistance.
Gould ran through the home and out the back door. Officers found him hiding under a bush.
Gould was highly intoxicated, had no driver’s license, and was wanted in Florida for probation violation, according to information from Huron County Sheriff Kelly Hanson.
While authorities were handling that incident, information on the double homicide in Sanilac County was broadcast, along with a description of the suspect and vehicle.
On Thursday, Gould was charged with second degree home invasion, assaulting/resisting/obstructing a police officer and operating while intoxicated in Huron County.
As of press time, criminal charges in Sanilac County are still pending as the murder investigation continues.
So far, authorities are unsure why the man fled to Huron County.
