CARO — A new business is looking to give customers the lowest grocery prices possible during a time when people need it the most.
Marcia and Jacques Weilbach have opened Super Saver Discount Grocery, located on the corner of M-24 and M-46 in Caro, next to MTW Controls, Inc. The discount grocery store offers items that are just past the expiration date or were unable to be sold by the larger chains because of packaging issues.
Jacques Weilbach said they take good care in picking the best products available for their store.
“If the package is torn or dirty, it is not sold here,” he said. “If the product is stored below 75 degrees, it will last five years.
“The best-by date is just saying that if you buy it by this date it should be prime.”
Weilbach said the products purchased from the wholesale market include items that could have had a printing error on a box or a problem with a barcode.
“They can’t sell it on their floor, so they sell it on the wholesale market,” he said.
The grocery store offers dry goods, canned goods, frozen foods and more. However, they do not sell fruits or vegetables.
Weilbach said carrying fruits and vegetables tends to become labor intensive and the moment they have to employ extra people, the price will have to go up on the product.
“Customers don’t want that,” he said. “They want to pay as least as possible.”
Within the next few weeks, the discount grocery will also be carrying fresh bread and milk from local suppliers.
The discount grocery store is open Monday through Saturday 9 a.m. - 6 p.m., and is closed on Sundays.
