Woman abducted and raped

CASS CITY — Authorities are trying to track down a man accused of abducting and raping a woman along Cemetery Road on Aug. 8.

The woman was walking along the road in Novesta Township around 4 a.m., when she was reportedly abducted and raped.

According to Tuscola County Undersheriff Glen Skrent, the suspect was described as a white man, in his 30s or 40s with a ‘large’ face, glasses, light-colored short hair and a beer belly.

The vehicle the suspect was driving is described as a standard blue colored Ford pick-up truck, without a cap on the bed.

Even though the incident is alarming, Pat Church, a resident of the area and owner of the Emporium in Deford, said he feels the area is still a safe place to live and work.

“It’s a terrible, terrible thing,” Church said. “I hope they catch the guy very soon.

“I don’t like the thought of this happening out here.”

The victim was treated at an area hospital and released. DNA samples were sent to a crime lab for analysis and the results are pending. A knife was used in the crime.

Skrent asked that anyone who sees a truck matching the description to take the necessary precautions.

“If they see a vehicle like that with a suspect like that, don’t try to follow it,” Skrent said. “Just get the license plate number and we’ll follow up on it.”

Anyone with information on this crime is asked to contact Detective Scott Jones at (989) 673-2233.

No one deserves that, but what in the world is she doing out walking in that rural area at 4am in the morn alone.

I used to walk in the early morning when I lived in town. I felt safe with all the houses and cars going by, even in the early hours of the morning. 4 or 5 am is a good time for me to walk because of our family's schedule; however, since I moved outside the village limits I have been reluctant to walk alone during those hours and opted for a treadmill to use at home. There was also an abduction of a woman walking in the early evening on August 11th in Georgia and I believe they are still looking for her. It's horrible that things like this have to happen. Please buddy up or walk at the high school in the evenings.

Someone said she had left a place in Gagetown or Cass City and was walking to her house in Deford. Not sure how true that is, but I do know she lives in Deford.
