Requests headed to voters

TUSCOLA COUNTY — Besides deciding on board of education seats during the Tuesday, May 5, annual school elections, voters will be asked to approve school, as well as township, ballot requests.

Caro Community School District: Is seeking a renewal of the 18 mill non-homestead tax for four years for general operations.

That excludes a voter’s principal residence, qualified agriculture lands and other property exempt by law.

If the renewal request is approved, it would generate about $1,593,567 the first year.

Reese School District: Officials are asking for a renewal of 1.5 mills for five years for a sinking fund, and to restore the millage levy back to that level because it had been rolled back under the Headlee Amendment to the state constitution to 1.4941 mills.

The money in the sinking fund would be used for construction and repairs of school buildings.

If approved, the millage would generate about $266,000 the first year.

Where a registered voter of the Reese School District lives will determine where they go to vote. Those in the school district who live inside Tuscola County boundaries vote at the Denmark Township Hall, and those in the district who live in Saginaw County in Blumfield, Buena Vista or Merritt townships will vote at their respective township halls.

While the Akron-Fairgrove Schools itself will only have board of education seats as its issues on the ballot, district residents who live in Wisner Township will be asked to approve 2 new mils for four years for township road improvements and maintenance.

If approved, the millage would generate about $47,463 the first year.

And, also part of Wisner Township is in the Unionville-Sebewaing Area School District, so voters in that section of the township would decide on USA Board of Education seats, a school ballot proposal and the Wisner Township Road millage.

Unionville-Sebewaing Area School District: Is asking for a renewal of 18 mills for six years on non-homestead property. That excludes a voter’s principal residence, qualified agriculture lands and other property exempt by law.

Marlette School District is also asking for a renewal of its 18 mills on non-homestead property.

The polls will be open 7 a.m.-8 p.m.
