Get ready for the ‘King’

MAYVILLE ‹ Life is a challenge. For children, young adults and adults with special needs, life’s daily challenges are intensified. So when an opportunity comes around to break loose, have some fun, go swimming, fishing, or sit around a campfire, the opportunity is seized.

For 51 years, The Fowler Center has provided that outdoor experience to thousands who have developmental and physical disabilities. "And it’s exciting to see," said Thomas Hussmann, executive director of the center. "When a young man can climb the rock wall using only his left foot, well, it’s pretty humbling."

With no government funding, the Center counts on financial aid through a number of foundations, service clubs, churches and individuals.

"That’s why we hold several fund-raising events and that’s why we are really hoping people turn out for our newest, “Eras of the King” tribute," Hussmann said. "This is a new one for us. If it goes well, we hope to turn it into an annual event.”

Fund-raisers held annually by the center include the Fall Fling, an ice fishing contest on Harmon Lake and Casino Night.

"We really appreciate everyone’s support because this camp is so important, not just for the people who come here but for their caregivers, their parents and family members, who sometimes need some get-away time themselves," Hussman added.

Along with providing recreational programs for children, teens and adults, the center offers educational opportunities as well.

"Our camp sessions are designed to test abilities, and encourage education," Hussmann said. "Challenge activities can include a high-ropes course, a tree house, as well as the climbing wall. We also have a farm, a vegetable and flower garden, horseback riding, all things that enable our campers to touch and interact with living things."

Creative arts, outdoor education, wildlife education and sports activities round out the programs offered.

Situated on 200 acres, The Fowler Center is located south of Cat Lake Road on Harmon Road, just east of M-24.

Founded by Jack Fowler in 1957, the center has offered an outdoor experience to 10,000 people since its inception. Fowler, a special education teacher, believed strongly in a camping program for his students.

"Jack and his wife Reta believed that confidence and self-esteems can be built and fostered with an away-from-home experience," Hussmann explained. "Built on that belief, the center continues to expand today with those ideas in mind."
