Millington home destroyed in blaze

MILLINGTON ‹ Fire officials are pretty sure that lightning caused the fire that destroyed a house on Murphy Lake Road last Tuesday.

Millington Fire Chief Ron Danzier said the fire call came in at 3:10 a.m., June 23. The house, located at 3875 Murphy Lake, was owned by Gerald Myers.

Danzier said his department was assisted by both the Vassar and Fostoria fire departments with tanker power. Mayville Fire Department assisted with manpower.

"We were on the scene for almost five hours," Danzier said. "We’ve had a lot of storms coming through, a lot of lightning. I’m pretty sure that was the cause."

The loss of the house was estimated at $120,000 and the contents at approximately $50,000.

A Millington firefighters was injured while battling the blaze when a piece of broken glass penetrated the side of his boot.

Danizer said the fireman is recovering.
