Carson Andrew Berry

Carson Andrew Berry of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, age 21, passed away after a brief illness on Sunday, December 16, 2018, at Conway Medical Center surrounded by his loving family.
Carson was born December 19, 1996, in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina to Dr. Jim and Becky Berry. Carson suffered from Spinal Muscular Atrophy since birth. This condition left him confined to a wheelchair since the age of two.
Despite his physical limitations, he lead a happy and fulfilling life always looking for an alternative way to do something and always willing to try anything despite his physical disability. He had an infectious smile, an enormous sense of humor and a quick wit.
He attended Myrtle Beach schools, graduating from Myrtle Beach High School in 2015 with Honors. While at MBHS, he was an active member of the MBHS Navy Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps Unit for four years, reaching the rank of C/Lt. Commander and serving as the Supply Officer. He was also a member of the Beta Club and National Honor Society.
Carson was currently a senior at Coastal Carolina University in the Honors College, majoring in Marine Science and Minoring in German. Carson was also actively involved in advocating for handicap accessibility on the CCU campus during his time there.
He was also a big fan of the University of Michigan and the Detroit Lions. He was thrilled to be able to attend U-M football games in 2011 and 2017, and have the opportunity to spend some time visiting the Michigan Football Complex and meeting and talking with Head Football Coach Jim Harbaugh during his second trip.
Carson loved food and was always interested in trying something new and adventurous. When traveling as a family, he was always on the lookout for a new, exciting restaurant to visit.
In addition to his parents, Carson is survived by one brother, Cooper Anderson Berry of the home; his grandmothers: Ida Jane Prunty of Monongahela, Pennsylvania, and Ruth M. Berry of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; his aunt Cheryl Prunty of Phoenix, Arizona; his uncles: Randall K. Ewald of Clearwater, Florida, and Brian W. Ewald and wife Elaine, of Caro; special friend, Kathryn Lienhard of Conway, South Carolina; and many cousins and other extended family members. He was preceded in death by his grandfathers: Jerry Prunty of Monongahela, Pennsylvania, and Sheriff Paul P. Berry of Caro.
The family received friends at McMillan-Small Funeral Home on Wednesday, December 19, 2018, from 4-7 p.m. At 6 p.m. the family hosted a birthday celebration in honor of what would have been Carson’s 22nd birthday, with cake and a rousing rendition of Happy Birthday.
A Celebration of life Service took place on Thursday, December 20, 2018, at 4 p.m. in the Chapel of McMillan-Small Funeral Home, the Rev. Dr. Robert Wilkes officiated. Burial will be private at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Carson A. Berry Marine Science Scholarship Fund at South Atlantic Bank, 73- 29th Ave. N., Myrtle Beach, SC 29577.
