JAMES A. MONTGOMERY

James A. Montgomery of Gilford Township, age 79, died early Sunday morning, June 17, 2018 at Concerned Country Care in Montrose. He was born July 27, 1938 in Bay City, son of the late Will and Mary (Horst) Montgomery. He was a 1956 graduate of Fairgrove High School. On February 25, 1978, Jim married the former Shirley Adams. She predeceased him April 13, 2007. Jim served his country with the U.S. Navy from 1957–1959. He was employed for 39 years as a Machine Repairman at Saginaw Steering Gear. Giving his time and talent to advance the cause of Veteran’s affairs and benefits was the one of the top priorities of his life. He was a former commander of the Fairgrove VFW Post #7486, life member of Cass City VFW Post #3644, served on the Board of Directors of the Tuscola County Veterans Affairs, was a former VFW District #10 Commander, a former member of the Tuscola County Veterans Trust Fund, and volunteered at Alveda L Lutz V.A. Medical Center in Saginaw. His other enjoyments were fishing, hunting, farming and participating in tractor pulling events.
Surviving is his daughter, Ann Clark and her husband Randy of Montrose; two grandchildren, Sarah Davis of Hiram, Georgia; and K. Cole Davis of Saginaw; three step-children: Tammy (Gary) Wark of Fairgrove, R. “Pete” Van Alst of Reese; John Van Hurk of Lincoln; nine step-grandchildren and their spouses: Mike (Becky) Wark, Jamie Wark, Jodi (Jeff) Sakon, Tiffany (Brad) Gruehn, Travis Van Alst, Keith Van Hurk, Kim (Luke) Laube, Ashlee (Justin) Holmes, Kyle Clark; several step-great-grandchildren; sister, Nancy (Terry) Richardson of Grayling; sister-in-law, Marge Montgomery of Reese; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife Shirley, Jim was predeceased by his brother, Robert Montgomery and his sister, Joanne Broadworth and her husband Ed Broadworth, his two step-daughters-in-law, Mary Van Alst and CindiVan Hurk.
Cremation has taken place, and a Memorial Service to celebrate his life, will take place at noon Saturday, July 14, 2018 at the Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Home, 9940 Saginaw Street, Reese. Reverend Dr. Ed Kloos will officiate with Full Military Honors to be presented by the U.S. Navy Honor Guard. Mr. Montgomery’s family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.
Mr. Montgomery’s family requests that instead of sending flowers, please send a memorial in his name to the Department of Michigan VFW, National Home for Children, 924 N. Washington Street, Lansing, MI 48906.
